Tap water, reusable bottles, and publicly accessible hydration stations play an important role in the creation of healthy, resilient, and cool communities. In the face of increasing extreme heat and the urgent need for communities to become sustainable and be prepared for the impacts of climate change, these practices offer numerous benefits for our health, environment, and finances.
Climate Resolve is committed to promote awareness in Los Angeles communities of the high-quality water provided by LADWP and the multiple benefits of adopting drinking tap water as the primary source of hydration either at home or on-the-go from publicly accessible hydration stations.
Environmental Benefits
Choosing tap water reduces the reliance on single-use plastic bottles and minimizes the environmental impact caused by them. By drinking tap water, we reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills and oceans. It takes hundreds of years to decompose plastic, contributing to pollution in our lakes, rivers, and oceans also harming wildlife.
Drinking tap water from a reusable water bottle reduces our reliance on plastic bottles and our contribution to greenhouse gasses. Their production and transportation require a significant amount of energy and resources. More than 17 million barrels of oil are needed to keep up with our country’s annual demand for bottled water.
A single water bottle has a much bigger carbon footprint than it may seem. One 16.9 oz bottle – essentially 500 mml – has a carbon footprint of 82.8 grams of carbon dioxide. Considering that 35 billion of these items are tossed in the trash yearly, each bottle avoided makes a big difference. Reducing our dependence on plastic is a major part of how we can mitigate carbon and other greenhouse gasses and fight climate change.
Health Benefits
Reusable water bottles allow us to stay adequately hydrated throughout the day, promoting better health and well-being. By having easy access to water, we can maintain optimal hydration levels and support our body’s functions. In extremely high temperatures, water keeps you away from serious health issues such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke because it keeps your body’s temperature regulated while keeping your body cool. It also improves mood and cognitive function while preventing cramps and muscle fatigue.
In terms of tap water quality, federal requirements from EPA for tap water are far stricter and require more frequent testing and monitoring than water bottled from private companies. LADWP is the largest municipally owned water utility in the US and takes its water through proven scientific layers of treatment, including filtration and ultraviolet light, and chlorine disinfection. Several studies have identified dangerous chemicals, such as BPA and DEHP, as common components of the polycarbonate material used to make single-use plastic bottles. These substances can leach into the water harming your health.
Financial Benefits
Reusable water bottles are a cost-effective choice. By eliminating the need for single-use bottled water, we can save money in the long run and allocate resources to other essential aspects of our lives and our communities.
The average American drinks about 36 gallons of bottled water annually. With a switch to a reusable bottle and tap water, you save landfill space and yourself hundreds of dollars per year. Bottled water costs about $1.22 per gallon. Compare that to LADWP’s tap water for less than $0.01 per gallon. Tap water is a cost-efficient way to stay hydrated throughout your day.
Publicly Accessible Hydration Stations
The presence of publicly accessible hydration stations in our neighborhoods is a vital aspect of creating sustainable and cool cities. Hydration stations provide accessible and convenient access to tap water, making it easier for individuals to stay hydrated while on the go. This promotes a culture of wellness and encourages healthier choices.
By investing in hydration stations, you can contribute to the promotion of infrastructure that reduces plastic waste, conserves resources, and makes your community more extreme heat resilient. Furthermore, hydration stations can serve as community gathering points, fostering social interactions and strengthening neighborhood bonds. They provide an opportunity for people to come together, fostering a sense of belonging and community pride.
At Climate Resolve, we believe in harnessing the power of tap water, reusable bottles, and publicly accessible hydration stations to build resilience, promote sustainability, and create cool cities. By embracing these practices, we can make a positive impact on our environment, health, and community. Join us on this journey toward a more sustainable and resilient future.
We encourage you to pledge to some actions that will contribute to the adoption of drinking tap water and take a survey that will help us know more about your thoughts around tap water in your community. If you are interested in making tap water publicly accessible in your neighborhood through the LADWP Hydration Stations Initiative Program, you can review this information and reach out to us at gvarela@climateresolve.org.
